SIGNAL — Volund Manufacturing Raises $12M Seed Round to Produce Low-Cost Attritable Gas Turbine Engines

Source: LinkedIn post by Volund Manufacturing — posted June 9, 2026 (12 hours prior to capture, edited). Exclusive coverage: Tectonic Defense, June 4, 2026.

I. Company Profile

Volund Manufacturing is a Huntington Beach, California–based startup founded in 2025 that designs and manufactures low-cost, attritable gas turbine engines for defense applications. The company’s stated mission is to build propulsion systems optimized for high-rate, vertically integrated manufacturing rather than peak performance.

Name origin: Völund (also Wayland the Smith) is a mythical smith-god of Nordic and Germanic peoples, known for crafting weapons and armor. The name appears in the Völundarkviða, a poem in the Poetic Edda.

Steven Stanley, PhD CTO Aerojet Rocketdyne; Blue Origin — propulsion engineering
Ken Spaulding CMO (Chief Manufacturing Officer) Vescio Threading; Zodiac Engineering — precision machining
James Sonntag COO Yeti; Oakley; Fox Racing — product management and development

LinkedIn profiles: Eric Hostetler | Steven Stanley | Ken Spaulding | James Sonntag

CEO Hostetler quote from Tectonic Defense: “Volund is the output combining my long background with high-volume consumer goods…with my co-founders’ backgrounds in hardcore aerospace and defense manufacturing and quality engineering. [We’re] really building a new factory model that’s optimized for this new world of attributable mass.”

IV. Technology and Product

Volund is developing a small gas turbine engine for attritable munitions and unmanned systems. The engineering team was finalizing the gas turbine engine design as of June 2026, with a target completion date of end of June 2026.

Manufacturing model:

  • Vertically integrated factory with a “digital thread” running through the entire production process
  • Off-the-shelf PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems combined with a proprietary MES (Manufacturing Execution System)
  • The bespoke MES automatically propagates CAD design changes through the factory without manual rework
  • Hostetler described the approach: “We’re able to move through iterations and permutations of engine designs much more quickly than any kind of legacy system. [We’re] also able to dramatically reduce the amount of back-office headcount that we have to employ…to run that factory floor.”

Materials: Engineering team was still finalizing materials as of June 2026; Hostetler noted sheet metal manufacturing may prove more scalable than additive manufacturing.

Production roadmap:

Milestone Target Date
Engine design finalized End of June 2026
First prototype engine built Q3–Q4 2026
Engine flying with integrators Early 2027
Production rate: hundreds/year End of 2027
Production rate: hundreds/month (thousands/year) End of 2028

V. Defense Market Context

FAMM (Family of Affordable Mass Missiles)

Hostetler identified the FAMM program as a target application for Volund’s engine. Per FY27 Air Force budget documents (reported by Breaking Defense, April 29, 2026):

  • FAMM is the first program of record publicly revealed for the emerging low-cost cruise missile platform
  • FY27 request: $300M (reconciliation) to procure 1,000 units
  • FY28 projection: 5,300 units
  • FY31 projection: 7,990 units/year
  • Total projected procurement: ~27,000 units
  • Active FAMM vendors (per Air Force budget documents): Anduril, CoAspire, Zone 5 Technologies
  • FAMM engine awards to date: PBS Aerospace ($3M), Beehive Industries, Kratos/Technical Directions Inc. — all for turbine engine technical maturation and production facility preparation

Integrator Relationships

Hostetler stated Volund is “working with integrators” to ensure engine design compatibility, naming: Anduril, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Zone 5 Technologies, and Leidos. No formal contracts or partnerships had been announced as of June 2026.

INDOPACOM Context

Hostetler’s stated rationale for targeting small air-breathing jet turbines: “As we’re looking towards China and INDOPACOM as the next theater that we’re concerned about, all the distances there are in the hundreds of miles versus the tens of kilometers…[We’re working] on the systems that are limiting factors for those longer distances…[which are] small air-breathing jet turbines.”
